Snow Sports Museum of West Virginia

Davis, West Virginia

A group of dedicated snow sports enthusiasts founded the Snows Sports Museum of West Virginia in 2018. The SSMWV preserves and documents West Virginia’s copious Snow Sports History. While West Virginians have always embraced winter and winter activities, the first ski area south of the Mason-Dixon Line was founded in 1951 by the Ski Club of Washington DC. The Ski Club opened Driftland near present-day Canaan Valley Resort, bringing snow sports to the Southeast.

After Driftland opened, other resorts were established. A few resorts closed, but several are thriving, such as Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan Valley Resort, Olegby Resort, Snowshoe, Winterplace, and White Grass. These resorts helped develop and continue to contribute to our thriving tourist industry.

Visit the Snow Sports Museum in Davis, West Virginia – the state’s first ski town. The Museum features rotating exhibits honoring the state’s plethora of snow sports stories and legends.
